Water Treatment for Apartments and Rentals: Your Options as a Tenant

You do not need to own a home to benefit from clean, filtered water. Here are the best water treatment options for apartment dwellers and renters in the Tri-State Area.

The Renter's Water Treatment Challenge

Renters face a unique set of constraints when it comes to water treatment: most cannot install under-sink systems without landlord permission, cannot access the building's main water line to install whole-house treatment, and need solutions that can move with them when they relocate. The good news is that several effective water treatment options exist specifically for rental situations — and some do not require any installation at all.

Option 1: Pitcher Filters (No Installation Required)

Pitcher filters are the entry-level option for renters. Brands like Brita, PUR, and ZeroWater require no installation — simply fill from the tap and dispense filtered water from the refrigerator. They effectively reduce chlorine taste and odor, some heavy metals (certified models), and certain other contaminants.

Limitations: Standard pitcher filters do not remove nitrates, fluoride, PFAS, chromium-6, or significantly reduce TDS. Capacity is limited (typically 10–18 cups), requiring frequent refills for a household that cooks and drinks mostly filtered water. Filter replacement costs typically run $60–$100 annually. For renters primarily concerned with chlorine taste, a pitcher filter is a reasonable starting point.

Option 2: Countertop Filters (No Drilling Required)

Countertop filters connect directly to your faucet's aerator with a simple threaded adapter — no drilling, no permanent modifications. They provide substantially more filtration capacity than pitcher filters (typically 500–1,000 gallons per filter versus a pitcher's 40–80 gallons) and deliver filtered water on demand directly from the tap.

Countertop carbon block filters are highly effective at removing chlorine, chloramines, VOCs, and taste/odor compounds — addressing the most common complaints about Tri-State tap water. More advanced countertop multi-stage systems (Berkey is a common example) add additional filtration layers including fluoride removal. These systems disconnect and pack up in minutes when moving.

Option 3: Countertop RO Systems (Newer, No-Install Option)

A relatively new category of countertop reverse osmosis systems — including the AquaTru and similar products — provides genuine RO filtration without any plumbing connections. These units sit on the countertop, pull water from a reservoir you fill manually, and produce RO-purified water stored in an integrated tank. They offer the same 95–99% TDS reduction as under-sink RO systems but in a completely portable form factor.

These systems are more expensive ($300–$500) than pitcher filters but provide dramatically superior filtration. For renters in older buildings with lead pipe concerns, a countertop RO system is the most effective portable solution available.

Option 4: Under-Sink RO with Landlord Permission

Under-sink reverse osmosis systems deliver the best water quality and are the most convenient in-home option — purified water on demand from a dedicated tap without any countertop footprint. Installation requires drilling a small hole in the sink deck (1.25 inch diameter) and connecting to the hot water supply and drain lines. Most landlords will grant permission for this installation when asked, particularly since the system can be removed and the connections capped when you move out.

Always get permission in writing and photograph the installation before and after. When vacating, cap the supply line tee, remove the drain saddle, and fill any drilled holes with matching caulk. Many renters find the under-sink RO system one of the first things they install in a new apartment and one of the first things they take when they move.

Option 5: Shower Filters for Chloramine Removal

For renters specifically concerned about chloramine exposure during bathing — a legitimate concern given Tri-State utilities' near-universal use of chloramination — a shower filter with catalytic carbon is an effective and inexpensive improvement (typically $40–$80) that installs in seconds by threading between the shower arm and head. Replace every 6 months. This does not address drinking water but meaningfully reduces chloramine inhalation and skin exposure during showering.
